The item display below was generated on the fly from this MARC record. Please note that most of the links from within the item display will not work, since this documentation is not on the same server as the American Memory service.

The treatment of fields for display has developed through experience with records actually incorporated into American Memory. It is likely that some adaptation will be needed to accommodate other MARC fields used by LC/Ameritech awardee institutions and for records generated at LC but under different guidelines. It is also likely that NDLP will revise the layout at some stage.

This example is based on a MARC record in use currently within American Memory. That record does not provide a perfect model for the special requirements for LC/Ameritech awardees. In particular, LC is not yet using subfield $u of the 856 field, and has not retro-fitted records to provide a consistent categorization of form and genre at the item level.

The link "under" this thumbnail is to a URL that was generated on the fly from the $d and $f subfields in the MARC 856 field. For American Memory, the ($d,$f) combination actas as a unique identifier for a digital item. LC does not use multiple 856 fields for different resolutions of the same image but dynamically generates additional text links to other resolutions corresponding to the same $f.
For LC/Ameritech awardees mounting their digital content at their own site, the link is expected to use the $u subfield. In most cases, the URL in $u will link to a presentation (often generated dynamically) by the awardee institution of the item that incorporates links to alternate versions (and other local information, such as how to order reproductions, or get access to the original materials).
