This thesaurus is maintained and published by the Library's Prints and Photographs Division. Its terms are applied to images, including those used for American Memory.

Categories for the Description of Works of Art, from the Getty Trust

The categories, developed under the auspices of the Art Information Task Force, are, "guidelines for formulating the content of art databases. They articulate an intellectual structure for descriptions of objects and images: in this sense they constitute a schematic representation of the requirements and assumptions implicit in the practice of the discipline of art history."
