NDLP Glossary - U
- URC
- Uniform Resource Characteristics, a term used by the IETF to
describe a minimal set of metadata associated with a resource on
the Internet. A URC can be thought of as a bare-bones catalog record.
There is currently no consensus on content or form for a URC.
- URI
- Uniform Resource Identifier, a broader class of identifier that
includes URLs, URNs, and URCs.
Relevant NDLP documentation sections:
- URL
- Uniform Resource Locator, the standard form for
identifier for resources on the World Wide Web in early 1996.
Relevant NDLP documentation sections:
- URN
- Uniform Resource Name, a proposed form of
identifier for digital resources on the Internet that would be
independent of location and valid for the long term. No standard form of
URN exists, but several prototype schemes are under development.
LC is working with the handle scheme for URNs from the
Corporation for National Research Initiatives in a prototype digital
archive.
