- Machine Readable Cataloging. Official documents describe the MARC
formats as "standards for the representation and communication of
bibliographic and related information in machine-readable form". Today's
library automation systems use MARC as a "lingua franca," a format that
is universally understood. All systems can import and export records in
MARC format [examples and more detail]
LC is the
maintenance agency for
MARC.
- MUMS
- Multiple Use MARC System. MUMS is LC's primary cataloging system.
