NDLP Glossary - G

GIF
Graphics Interchange Format. This file format, which is widely used on the WWW for images within documents (inline images), was originally developed in 1987 by CompuServe. Thumbnail versions of NDLP images are displayed over the WWW in GIF format, which delivers a high level of compression (resulting in very small files to deliver over the network) but is limited to 256 colors or levels of grey (8 bits per pixel). All graphical WWW browsers support inline GIF images.
GILS
Government Information Locator Service. This project, established under the Paperwork Reduction Act of 1995, aims to develop a decentralized, distributed catalog of government information resources. A Z39.50 application profile has been developed to support the project.
