There are no known restrictions on photographs taken by Sergei
Mikhailovich Prokudin-Gorskii; however, heirs of the photographer
have expressed concern about commercial use.
Access: Subject to P&P policy on serving
originals, which requires the use of digital images in lieu of the
original negatives.
Reproduction (photocopying, hand-held camera copying,
photoduplication and other forms of copying allowed by "fair
use"): Subject to P&P policy on copying which prohibits photocopying of the
original photographs.
Publication and other forms of distribution: Permitted.
There are no known restrictions on the use of these images. The issue
of copyright was not addressed during the purchase of the collection from
Prokudin-Gorskii's heirs in France in 1948. French law is unclear as to
whether the heirs own any rights. However, they have expressed concern
about "commercial use" and alteration or manipulation of the images. As a courtesy to them, the Library
