Women's History Resources in the Library of Congress Prints and Photographs Division

magnifying glassPicture Pathfinder

Because of the myriad types of images found in Prints and Photographs Division holdings, many of which have their own form of access, researchers normally end up consulting a variety of tools and collections in investigating aspects of any topic. The pathfinder below was developed in conjunction with the chapter on the Prints and Photographs Division in American Women: A Library of Congress Guide for the Study of Women's History and Culture in the United States. The pathfinder is intended to give researchers a flavor for the variety of ways in which any given topic can be researched in the division's holdings, as well as offering a starting point for pursuing research in various topic areas that broadly reflect aspects of American women's lives. An updated version is also available as part of the Library of Congress Research Guides.

Other than suggested searches in the Prints and Photographs Online Catalog (PPOC), which is available remotely, research strategies below refer to tools that must be consulted in the reading room. Researchers should keep in mind that these lists of tools and collections merely point out those that should not be missed in approaching a topic area, but cannot hope to cover every file, index, or heading potentially relevant to a broad subject area or the sub-topics that may pertain to it. Because of the unique materials in the Prints and Photographs Division and the unique access systems leading to them, reference staff expect you to consult regularly with them as you pursue your research in the collections.

1. Portraits, Fashion, and the Body

At the most rudimentary level, the division's pictorial holdings are valued for their ability to show how something--or someone--looked. In addition to showing what a particular individual looked like, portraits can provide clues regarding fashion trends and cultural conventions. Fashion prints, fashion photography, and "glamour" photographs also shed light on such trends by documenting physical qualities that were held up as standards of beauty, by situating these idealized bodies in idealized settings, and by highlighting innovations or developments that defied convention. Portraits are found among most of the types of materials found in the Division: the products of photojournalism, advertising images, materials found in organizational records and personal papers. Likewise, fashion images and more "exotic" depictions of women's bodies are found in many forms: in fashion plates, among the historical prints, in stereographs, and in panoramic documentation of beauty pageants.

2. Political Activity and Social Reform

Other than the division's substantial documentation of the women's suffrage campaign, images that actually show women engaging in political and social reform work are relatively few and scattered. Representation of some of the causes for which they worked, however, especially the abolition of slavery, the abolition of child labor, civil rights, prohibition, and, to a certain degree, ecology awareness and pacifism, is available in the division's holdings. Little material has so far been found on food or social purity issues. Representation of organizations working for charitable and reform causes can be found in many of the division's collections.

6. Arts and Literature

Representation of women involved in performing arts is a strength, particularly of the poster and photograph collections, with women musicians being depicted less frequently. Locating images showing women engaging in literary or visual arts is more difficult. As noted above, portraits of women involved in the arts, and the products of women artists can be found through online and other catalogs. (See also Pathfinder 1: Portraits, Fashion and the Body.)

___ PRINTS AND PHOTOGRAPHS ONLINE CATALOG: under headings such as "Actresses"; "Artists colonies"; "Artists' studios"; "Artists"; "Authors"; "Theatrical productions"; names of individuals involved in the arts (note: individuals known for their involvement in the arts are often indexed by their proper name only, not by their occupation); names of particular productions; etc.

8. Sports and Recreation

Since depictions of women's sports and recreational activities were frequently used in advertising and in the press, and since leisure activities were often a favored focus in the work of documentary and amateur photographers, images of this aspect of women's lives are found in a wide range of the division's collections.

___ PRINTS AND PHOTOGRAPHS ONLINE CATALOG: under headings such as "Athletes"; "Children playing ..."; "Women–Social life"; "Women–Sports"; under particular activities, e.g., "Dance," "Swimming" and under types of equipment, e.g., "Bicycles & tricycles"; etc.

9. Science, Medicine, Technology

Other than women's involvement in nursing, representation of women's participation in medicine, either as doctor or patient, is infrequent in the collections. Women's activities in the spheres of science and technology (other than as users of technology) are even more sparse in the division's holdings. Portraits of individual scientists are not routinely indexed under the profession.

10. Racial and Ethnic Groups

Because of the lack of identification that accompanies many visual materials, it is often difficult to determine with certainty the race/ethnicity of depicted individuals, both when organizing and describing them for access and when attempting to confirm such identities at the research end. Moreover, in older access systems, where only one index term could be applied (the one where the image was to be physically found), racial and ethnic aspects of an image may have received less attention than prominent events or activities. As a consequence, searching for depictions of specific racial and ethnic groups can be problematic.

Although terms for racial and ethnic groups can be found in many of the division's access tools, a thorough researcher should not stop there. It is advisable to search under the specific geographic regions in the United States where members of the racial or ethnic groups settled in large numbers, as well as to search for occupations, events, and activities that might be associated with that ethnic or racial identity. For instance, Lewis Hine's photographs for the National Child Labor Committee include documentation of various manual trades on the eastern seaboard during the early part of the century; his photo captions sometimes suggest the ethnicity of those depicted. Generally, however, you will need to use a combination of internal and external clues to determine whether depicted individuals may have possessed the identity that is sought, since casual labeling by the makers of the images may have ascribed inaccurate or no racial or ethnic identity to the subjects of the images.

___ PRINTS AND PHOTOGRAPHS ONLINE CATALOG: generally employs terms for ethnic and racial groups found in the Library of Congress Subject Headings (e.g. "African-Americans"; "Japanese Americans"; " Indians of North America") but with the division's own topical subdivisions (e.g. "–Clothing & dress"; "–Employment") added. A few collections, such as the Farm Security Administration/Office of War Information online records, employ terminology used in the original documentation, e.g., "Negroes," "Spanish Americans." Other useful terms, drawn from the LC Thesaurus for Graphic Materials I: Subject Terms, include "Emigration & immigration"; "Immigrants"; "Aliens"; "Ethnic Neighborhoods"; "Ethnic stereotypes"; "Minorities"; and "Race discrimination."
___ SPECIFIC SUBJECTS PHOTO FILE/SPECIFIC SUBJECTS INDEX: under headings such as "Chinese Americans"; "German Americans"; "Indians of North America"; "Jews"; "Negro/Negroes"; as well as under the topic "Emigration and immigration." Some of these ethnic headings are also used under the names of specific wars.
___ GRAPHICS FILE: especially Immigration (LOT 7010); African American history (LOT 4422); Indians (LOTs 4391 and 4411)
___ DIVISIONAL CARD CATALOG: under such terms as "Chinese Americans and Chinese in America"; and "Jews." Material relating to Native Americans is in two filing sequences: "Indians, American" and "Indians of North America." Likewise, material relating to African Americans is indexed both under "Negro" and under "Afro-Americans"; and immigration-related material is under both "Immigration" and "Emigration and immigration."
___ NYWTS: under designations for groups ("Japanese-Americans"; "Jews--"; "Negroes--") and names of ethnic organizations (e.g., Italian-American War Veterans), as well as under headings such as "Immigration–General" and "New York City–Nationalities–[name of ethnic group]"
___ U.S. NEWS & WORLD REPORT COLLECTION: Images of African Americans are listed under "Negroes." There are some listings under "Immigration," "Jewish" and "Jews"; but, generally, there is little direct indexing for racial or ethnic groups. On the other hand, searching under "U.S. -- California – Los Angeles," one can find material describing Mexican Americans in that city.
___ FSA/OWI COLLECTION: includes some classification numbers for specific groups: .329156 [Indians]; .329158, [Italian Americans]; .329159 [Orientals, Japanese]; .32916 [Jewish Americans]; .32918 [Scandinavian Americans]; .329185 [Mexicans and Spanish Americans]. Also, a few classification numbers for activities (e.g., .8438 [ Negro Church Services]); or sections of town (e.g., .25906 [Mexican Section]) relate to specific groups. These should be used merely as a starting point, however, as related images of the same people may be filed under other classification numbers, depending on what is most prominently depicted. Determining the LOT number printed on the back of the mount of an image of interest and viewing other materials in the microfilmed LOT can lead to these related images; viewing neighboring negative numbers in the online collection in PPOC may yield additional views.
