Extension Schemas for the Metadata Encoding and Transmission Standard

NOTE: This is the September 2001 presentation of proposed extension schemas. It has been superceded by a revised version posted in March 2002.

Introduction. The Audio-Visual Prototyping Project will use the emerging Metadata Encoding and Transmission Standard (METS) to encode the metadata for digital objects. The METS website includes an Overview and Tutorial about the "primary schema" that is intended to serve as a framework document and explains that users may select extension schemas in order to provide additional metadata. The diagram below indicates the arrangement of the primary and extension schemas proposed for use in the Audio-Visual Prototyping Project, and features hyperlinks to the schema xsd files.

The prototyping project plans to use the generic descriptive metadata extension schema gdm.xsd developed at the University of California at Berkeley. Some of the specific audio-visual extension schemas are placeholders awaiting development from other organizations. For example, the extension schema for image technical information is intended to embrace the elements and attributes expressed by the data dictionary for the NISO image metadata set. When the official NISO image metadata schema is ready, it will supplant our placeholder. We emphasize the tentative nature of some of these extension schemas; the video extension schema, for example, awaits improvement by video engineering specialists.

Administrative Metadata Section

<techMD> allFilesMD.xsd information common to all files, e.g., size, date created, Internet media type
audioMD.xsd additional information specific to audio files, e.g., sampling frequency
imageMD.xsd additional information specific to image files, e.g., bits per pixel, color space
textMD.xsd additional information specific to text files, e.g., character set, encoding used
videoMD.xsd additional information specific to video files, e.g., bit rate, compression codec
<rightsMD> rightsMD.xsd rights, restrictions, and/or other information that can be used to support access management systems; LC application focus on access management support only
<sourceMD> sourceMD.xsd information common to all items that have been reformatted or migrated, e.g., identifier, type, dimensions
audioSourceMD.xsd additional information specific to audio items to be digitized or presented for file-format migration, e.g., type of groove (disc), channel or track specifications, sampling frequency (digital source)
imageSourceMD.xsd additional information specific to items scanned to produce images or [coming in next iteration] presented for file- format migration, e.g., condition, composition (type of material)
textSourceMD.xsd additional information specific to text files presented for file-format migration, e.g., character set, encoding used
videoSourceMD.xsd additional information specific to video items to be digitized or presented for file-format migration, e.g., tape stock information, video format information, bit rate (digital source)
