Dennis McGovern New ESR Team Leader

Dennis McGovern is the new team leader of the Education, Sports, and Recreation Team (ESR), Social Sciences Cataloging Division, effective Nov. 7. He had served as acting team leader since the former team leader's retirement in August. He first joined the Library in February 1981 as an editorial assistant in the Congressional Research Service. In August of the same year, he joined the LOIS Processing Section in the former Order Division, Acquisitions Directorate, and April 1984 became a CIP publisher liaison in the Cataloging in Publication Division. After completing a master's degree in library science at the University of Maryland, College Park he became a cataloger at the Martin Luther King Memorial Library in the District of Columbia Public Library system, returning to the Library of Congress as a descriptive cataloger in 1987. He joined the Education, Sports, and Recreation Team when it was formed in 1989 as part of the Whole Book Cataloging Project. He also spent three months as a visiting cataloger at George Washington University's Gelman Library and had a temporary promotion in 1998 as acting team leader of the Music and Sound Recordings III Team in the Special Materials Cataloging Division.

McGovern is one of the Cataloging Directorate's few "total whole book catalogers," performing Dewey classification in addition to descriptive and subject cataloging. He has been active in labor- management consultative groups and served the Program for Cooperative Cataloging by reviewing the NACO contributions of two law libraries and the National Archives. In addition to his MLS degree, he earned a bachelor's degree with a major in history from Siena College, Loudonville, N.Y., and a New York state teaching certificate. He also has federal government work experience with the National Institute of Education.

Retirement of SSCD Chief Regene Ross

Regene Ross, chief of the Social Sciences Cataloging Division (SSCD) since January 1995, retired from the Library on Dec. 31, 1999. She began her LC career as a subject cataloger and had held progressively responsible positions as assistant chief of the former Subject Cataloging Division, assistant chief of the History and Literature Cataloging Division, and acting chief of the former Enhanced Cataloging Division. Most recently she had supervised the LC ILS Help Desk, ensuring prompt resolution of user problems in the first weeks after ILS Cataloging Day One last August.

Until the vacant position of chief of SSCD can be posted and filled, team leaders will rotate into the position of acting assistant chief to carry out the duties of chief. Margaret Wayne, SSCD Romance Languages Team leader, is currently the acting assistant chief, to be followed by Law Team leader Margaret Loewinger at the beginning of March.
