6A. Preliminary rule
A series is defined as a group of separate works related to one another by the fact that each work bears, in addition to its own title proper, a series title applying to the group as a whole. Television series, theatrical serials, newsreels, and educational and technical series intended to be viewed consecutively are described in Chapter 1. Such types of series titles are considered part of the title proper because the episode or part titles are ambiguous or meaningless unless they are used within the context of their series titles. This chapter discusses non-television series which do not need to be viewed consecutively. The individual works may or may not be numbered. A series statement is treated separately from the title of each of its parts. In addition to the following rules, for further guidance on the treatment of non-television series, see also AACR 2, 1.6. For guidance on series added entries, see AACR 2, 25.5 and Chapters 21 and 26.

Enclose each series statement in parentheses. (Unless parentheses are automatically generated).
Precede a parallel title of a series or subseries by a space, equal sign, space.
Precede other title information relating to a series or subseries by a space, colon, space.
Precede the first statement of responsibility relating to a series by a space, diagonal slash, space.
Precede subsequent statements of responsibility relating to a series or subseries by a space, semicolon, space.
Precede the numbering within series or subseries by a space, semicolon, space.
Precede the title of a subseries by a period, space unless the subseries title is preceded by a series alphabetic or numeric designation, in which case, use a comma, space.

6D. Parallel titles of series
Capitalization and punctuation: Capitalize the first word of the parallel title. Do not capitalize the following word unless it is a proper noun. Precede the parallel title by a space, equal sign, space.
Although a parallel title is defined by traditional library usage as the title proper in another language and/or script, for moving image cataloging, only rerelease or reissue titles in the same language and/or script will be used as parallel series titles. Uniform title added entries will always be given for parallel titles of series. For guidance, see Appendix D, M/B/RS Policy on Uniform Titles.
If only the name of the series has been changed, use the rerelease or reissue series title as the parallel series title following the original series title in the series statement area.

6E. Other title information
Give other title information if it is necessary for identification of the series. Separate the series title from other title information by the space, colon, space punctuation. Do not capitalize the word following the colon unless it is a proper noun.

6F. Statement of responsibility relating to series
Give statements of responsibility if they are necessary for identification of the series. Record the credit function relating to the entire series in the series statement of responsibility area following the space, slash, space punctuation. Use the credit terms found on the item unless secondary research proves them to be inaccurate, or unless such transcription would result in lack of clarity. For non-English language moving image works, use the English language terms for these functions if there is a direct translation for the credit terms. When there is uncertainty as to the translation of the credit term, use the terminology as it appears on the item or other sources. See 0E.

Optionally, give statements of responsibility even if they are not necessary for identification of the series.

6G. International Standard Serial Number (ISSN)
Give the International Standard Serial Number (ISSN) of a series if it appears on the work or other sources. See also 6J. Note that ISSNs are not assigned to motion picture series. They are only rarely assigned to video series.
Punctuation: The acronym ISSN is followed by a space and two groups of four digits separated by a hyphen.

6H. Numbering within series
Give the numbering of the work within the series in the terms given on the work. Use abbreviations as instructed in AACR 2, Appendix B and numerals as instructed in AACR 2, Appendix C.

Retain roman numerals if the substitution of arabic numerals makes the statement less clear, as, for example, when roman and arabic numerals are used in conjunction to distinguish a series, episode, or group from the number, part, or other division of that group and there is no term associated with the designation of the number, part or other division. When roman numerals are retained, write them in upper case.

6K. More than one series statement
The information relating to one series, or series and subseries, constitutes collectively one series statement. If a work belongs to two or more separate series and/or series and subseries, make separate series statements. Follow the preceding instructions for recording each series statement. Do not confuse separate series statements with parallel titles of series described in 6D.

If parts of a work belong to different series and this relationship cannot be stated clearly in the series area, give details of the series in a note. See 7B22.
6L. Series-like phrases
Distinguish between phrases that are true series and those that are not. If a phrase is determined to be a series, treat it as such. If it is not a series, it may be included elsewhere in the bibliographic record (e.g., use as part of the statement of responsiblity or give as a note) or not transcribed at all. See 1G3 and Chapter 7B7.
